The first episode of Resident Evil: Revelations 2 has arrived today on PSN (Xbox and PC versions are coming tomorrow), and with it, the first reviews exploring whether it's a worthy addition to the franchise.

An episodic sequel to 2012 game Resident Evil: Revelations, Capcom will be releasing one episode per week beginning today and ending on March 17. Whereas the original Revelations debuted on 3DS and was later ported to numerous other platforms, Revelations 2 is starting out as a downloadable game on five platforms (with a Vita version to come). Following the release of the final episode, a physical version will be released--at a higher price--with bonus extras.

Check out a sampling of the first reviews (or, in some cases, reviews-in-progress) for Episode One below. For more, check out GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

"Though you have to wade through mediocre puzzles and endure cringe-worthy dialogue and references to past games, episode one successfully entices you to look forward to the next episode. Just before you feel like its antics are wearing you down, it commands your attention by redeeming itself during the second half, just before sealing the deal with an impactful cliffhanger. With tastes of both classic and modern Resident Evil, Revelations 2 has something for everyone, but it would be served better if it was a little more focused and had a little less Moira." -

Destructoid -- 9/10

"Resident Evil: Revelations 2 feels like a budgeted release at times visually, but given the interesting environments and insanely detailed Raid Mode, that's okay. Either mode is worth the $5 entry fee alone, and I will be playing this for weeks to come both alone and with a partner." -

"Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is off to a great start. Its first episode offers up varied, cooperative action, while its numerous unlockables and Raid mode will keep you occupied until Episode Two." -

"Raid mode does feel good but it simply doesn't feel right without online. This is a co-op mode that has to wait for the co-op option. Capcom only knows why. The question Revelations 2 poses through stuff like this is why it's being released in the way it is. This doesn't feel like an episodic game, it feels like a game that's been portioned unnecessarily--and this in itself wouldn't bother me, except it has negatively affected the initial feature set, and down the line will reward people for waiting until the retail release to buy it. This is crazy." -

IGN -- 7/10

"Revelations 2: Episode One is let down by dull environments and creature design, but a terrific co-op mode, intriguing story, and replayable Raid Mode balances out its flaws. Not quite a headshot, then; but it’s left a bloody impression on me nonetheless." -

Game Informer

"I enjoyed Revelations 2's first episode, but not the ending cliffhanger. It was meant to be dramatic and shocking, but it didn't create the uncertainty it should have. That being said, everything Resident Evil fans know and love about the series is here. The episode has plenty of callbacks to past entries (Jill sandwich!), adrenaline-pumping combat, and a deranged story." -
